How to Build Wooden Doors for your free standing Cabinet or Cupboard

Assuming that you have built your free standing wooden cabinet or cupboard and you are at the stage of building and installing doors, you will need to follow the following simple steps. The easiest way to accomplish this task is by using a reliable door plan if you have one. Most woodworking resources usually have good door plans.

Simple steps to follow when building and installing your cabinet door:

  • Start by laying out the door frames and cutting out biscuit slots where the hinges will go.
  • Proceed to cut the panels as well and smoothen them using a sandpaper
  • Apply at least three coats of poly to both sides of the door panels then attach the solid wood frames to the door panels
  • Be sure to leave room for the doors to swing freely; this can easily be done by planing about 2 degrees bevel on the inner edge of door.
  • You should be ready now to set the cabinet doors in place, then examine it for any necessary corrections and fix them
  • Transfer the mortise locations on the stiles to the doors, then cut those mortises accordingly
  • Sand the doors to smoothen them before installing the hinges on the cabinet frame and doors. It is important to leave the screws slightly loose at this stage and double check for any needed corrections
  • Now you can install the handle for closing and opening the door. This will depend on your preference. However, you can build a door pull very easily using an inch thick piece of wood.
  • Using a rip blade rabbet  or cut a groove of 3/8 of an inch
  • Proceed to bore a hole for the 5/8 of an inch for the door pull and don’t forget to smoothen it
  • Cut the curve on the band saw, refine and smoothen it as well.
  • The next step is to remove the left door and rip 3/16 of an inch from the inner edge then glue the pull to the inner edge
  • Remember to make a 2 degree bevel on the inner edge to match that of the other door (right). This will make it easier to open the doors.
  • Then sand the pull to make it smooth before installing the hinge pins. Check to make sure the cabinet door fits and when you are content, proceed to tighten all the screws on the hinges
